The Olympic Games, the Asian Games and the individual world championships all award gold, silver and bronze medals to the winners of the competition. However, a long time ago, the winners of sports competitions were rewarded with a circle of olive and cinnamon branches, namely "laurel crown". In 1465, a Gold Medal was awarded to the winner of the triple jump at a carnival held in Zurich, Switzerland. This may be the first time the winner has not been given a "crown". The winner of the first Olympic Games in 1895 won such a "laurel".
It was not until 1907 that the IOC made a formal decision to award gold, silver and bronze medals to the Olympic winners at the executive committee meeting held in the Hague, the Netherlands, and the decision was implemented at the subsequent 4th London Olympic Games.
Since the 8th Paris Olympic Games in 1924, the International Olympic Committee has made the following additional decisions: the winners not only award medals, but also issue certificates (medals).
The design and production of gold, silver and bronze medals were specifically stipulated in the decision: the diameter of medals for the first, second and third prizes should not be less than 60 mm, and the thickness should be 3 mm. Among them, the first prize (gold medal) and second prize (silver medal) medals are made of silver, the purity (silver content) is not less than 92.5%, and the surface of the first prize medal (gold medal) is plated with at least 6 grams of pure gold. These regulations have been used since the 9th Amsterdam Olympic Games in 1928.
